NOAA renews University of South Alabama study of Mobile Bay oysters, crabs and seatrout with $3.8 million
NOAA's RESTORE Science Program announced on Oct. 14, 2026, a $3,834,439 five-year renewal for a University of South Alabama project that tracks how oysters, blue crabs, southern flounder and spotted seatrout in Mobile Bay respond to human activity and changing water conditions.
NOAA's RESTORE Science Program announced on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, that a long-running Mobile Bay fisheries study led by the University of South Alabama will receive $3,834,439 in additional funding.
What it studies. The project, led by John C. Lehrter, looks at how oyster, blue crab, southern flounder and spotted seatrout populations in Mobile Bay respond to human activities and to changes in water temperature, salinity, oxygen and other conditions. The team uses field sampling, laboratory experiments and computer modeling to give resource managers information for weighing management options for these species.
Why it was renewed. The project began in 2019 and is one of five Gulf projects renewed for another five years after independent experts reviewed scientific quality, performance and usefulness to Gulf resource managers. The five renewals total $24.7 million and are funded through the RESTORE Act, which was created after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
