California’s economy tops $4.5 trillion in output, governor’s office says, citing new federal data

The Office of Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, that California is the first U.S. state to pass $4.5 trillion in economic output, citing newly released data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). The office says the state’s private sector alone crossed $4 trillion for the first time.

Key figures in the release: The state economy grew by nearly $300 billion in the past year and by about $1.58 trillion since 2019. Growth in 2025 was 3.5% after inflation. Total wages and salaries grew 5.2%. California has about 11.5% of the U.S. population and nearly 14% of U.S. GDP, and the release calls it the world’s fourth-largest economy.

Manufacturing: California manufacturers produced $391 billion in output in 2025, about 9% of state GDP, and exported $159 billion in goods in 2024, the release says. It counts 1.2 million manufacturing workers and says the state has put more than $215 million into over 675 contracts since 2021 to train more than 194,000 manufacturing workers.

Recent laws the release highlights: updates to state antitrust and consumer protection law, including new authority for the Attorney General and district attorneys; letting businesses hire qualified architects or engineers to certify that certain tenant-improvement plans meet life-safety, health and building codes; protections for small businesses against abusive financing practices; support for free or low-cost small business technical assistance; and authorizing the sale of E15 gasoline (up to 15% ethanol) in California.
