The Cyrus Fire is burning near Cyrus Canyon Road and Sierra Way on the east side of Lake Isabella in the Kern River Valley. It started at 2:24 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. As of the 10:59 a.m. update Saturday on the CAL FIRE incident page, the fire is 542 acres and 50% contained. The Kern County Fire Department and the Sequoia National Forest are running the fire together (unified command).
Evacuation status: Evacuation WARNINGS are in effect for zones KRN-760-B and KRN-761. Zone KRN-761 was under an Evacuation ORDER on Friday; it was lowered to a warning at 9:38 a.m. Saturday. The warning for zone KRN-768 was lifted. A warning means there is a possible threat to lives and property. If you need extra time to leave, or you have pets or livestock, leave now. Shelter and animals: on Friday evening, officials opened an evacuation shelter at Kern Valley High School, 3340 Erskine Creek Road, Lake Isabella. For small animals, call the Kernville Chamber of Commerce at (760) 376-2629. Large animals can go to the John E. McNally Rodeo Arena, 305 Rio Vista Drive, Kernville. Call ahead to confirm the shelter is still open.
On Friday, Cal OES flew its FIRIS intelligence aircraft over the fire to help firefighters and told anyone in the evacuation order area to leave right away (https://x.com/Cal_OES/status/2108687528085860560). Kern County Fire said Friday night that the fire had stopped moving forward at about 450 acres.
