Slink Fire in Mono County: sheriff messages do not all match
Mono County sheriff messages on the weather-alert feed disagree. A warning to prepare was posted, then a later message said that warning was lifted. No street address is listed here.
The Slink Fire is a vegetation fire in Mono County, California, off U.S. Highway 395 just south of Highway 89, near the Topaz area. This page uses sheriff messages that the National Weather Service alert feed was still carrying on the evening of Saturday, October 3, 2026.
At 3:42 p.m. PDT the feed carried a Mono County message titled “Slink Fire Evacuation Warning Only.” It said the notice was a warning to prepare, not an order to leave. The fire location in that message is off Highway 395 just south of Highway 89.
At 5:14 p.m. PDT a later message said a temporary shelter was open at the Walker Community Center for people who need services. This brief does not print a street address.
At 6:44 p.m. PDT a newer sheriff message said the evacuation warning was lifted “as of now.” It said residents may return home and businesses may be open. It also said the Walker Community Center shelter was still available. That message spelled the fire “Sink Fire,” not “Slink Fire.” The headline on the same alert still said Slink Fire.
Those messages conflict. One still-listed alert says “warning only, please prepare.” A later alert says the warning is lifted. The newest sheriff line on this feed is the 6:44 p.m. lift. A shelter note was still posted after that. Check the sheriff before you travel, because this page cannot outrun a new order.
The sheriff number printed on the lifted-warning message is 760-932-7549, extension 7.
News reports the same afternoon did not match each other, and they did not match the sheriff feed. One early report said about 6 acres. A Carson Now report around 3:41 p.m. PDT said about 75 acres, zero percent contained, one-lane traffic on US-395, and no evacuation warning at that moment. Later public fire trackers said about 150 acres. The sheriff messages above did not state an acre count. This page does not pick a size.
No sheriff message used here reported injuries, deaths, or burned homes. This page does not invent those facts. It also does not give a street address.
