Essentials: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state and local health departments to investigate a multistate outbreak of illness in people who received glutathione injections. CDC says the illnesses are likely linked to elevated levels of endotoxins in compounded injectable glutathione made with dietary supplement grade ingredients. CDC page updated Sept. 15, 2026; CDC repeated the warning on X on Oct. 15, 2026.
Cases: CDC has received reports of over 25 people becoming sick in at least four states: Texas, Washington, Florida and New York. At least three patients have been hospitalized; all three received glutathione intravenously. One patient became critically ill and required intensive care, including treatment for shock and abnormal blood clotting. CDC says the number of people and states affected may change.
How it started: In July 2026, the Texas Department of State Health Services notified CDC about a group of patients who became sick after receiving intravenous (IV) glutathione at an outpatient wellness clinic. Patients received glutathione intravenously or by injection under the skin or into a muscle.
Symptoms CDC lists: fever and chills, body aches, headache, nausea, dizziness and low blood pressure. Reactions can be severe and may require emergency medical care.
Products: CDC says all linked injections so far were made by compounding pharmacies using glutathione ingredients intended for dietary supplements. There are no FDA-approved glutathione products in the United States. At least three Texas pharmacies have recalled compounded injectable glutathione for high endotoxin levels: Victory Medical Center Pharmacy, Optimal Balance Pharmacy (glutathione 200 mg/mL multi-dose vials) and Centric Compounding (glutathione, Myer's Cocktail and Tri-Immune Boost). FDA said the pharmacies it identified obtained dietary supplement grade glutathione Lot #229536 from Medisca Inc.; Greenwich Rx (Tomball, Texas) also recalled lots of glutathione 200 mg/mL 10 mL vials on Oct. 1, 2026. Check the FDA recall notices for lot numbers.
What to do (CDC): If you recently received injectable glutathione and develop fever, chills, severe body aches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, lightheadedness, or pain, swelling or redness at the injection site, contact your healthcare provider promptly. Seek emergency care for severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, fainting or signs of shock. Before getting an injection, ask whether the product was made with ingredients intended for injection and who compounded it. Report problems to FDA MedWatch: https://www.fda.gov/safety/medwatch
For providers (CDC): Do not administer injectable glutathione compounded from dietary supplement grade ingredients or whose ingredient grade cannot be verified; sequester recalled product and contact affected patients.
