Flood Watch: Chatham County, GA — heavy rain and possible flash flooding until 2 a.m. Sunday; rip currents at the beaches

The National Weather Service office in Charleston, S.C., has a Flood Watch for inland and coastal Chatham County until 2 a.m. EDT Sunday, Oct. 11 (11 p.m. PDT). NWS says bands of heavy rain will spread across southeast Georgia, and flash flooding is possible in low spots and places with poor drainage.

Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) said Saturday morning to expect heavy rain, coastal flooding and a slight risk of tornadoes, with high surf and rip currents along the coast (https://x.com/ChathamEMA/status/2108908227970621679). The Coastal Flood Advisory CEMA posted for Saturday morning's high tide ran from 7 to 11 a.m. and has ended.

Beach: NWS also has a Rip Current Statement for coastal Chatham County until 8 p.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 10 (5 p.m. PDT). Rip currents can pull even strong swimmers away from shore. Stay out of the water.

What to do: never drive or walk into floodwater. Turn around, don't drown. Watch for flooded streets, especially in low areas of Savannah and on the islands. If a Tornado Warning is issued, go to a small interior room on the lowest floor.
