Jefferson County: I-264 West weekend closure in Louisville postponed (Oct. 9, 2026)
KYTC postponed the weekend closure of I-264 West (Watterson Expressway) that was set to start at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, because of forecast bad weather. A new date will be announced.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) says the weekend closure of Interstate 264 West, the Watterson Expressway in Louisville, will not start Friday night, Oct. 9, as planned. The reason is the weather forecast. KYTC says it will announce a new date once one is set. For now, I-264 West stays open this weekend.
What had been planned: I-264 West was to close from 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, to 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, from the I-264/I-71 split to mile marker 21 at KY 1447 (Westport Road), so crews could pave asphalt. The I-264 West on-ramp from Westport Road was to stay open.
The detour KYTC listed for that plan: take I-71 North to I-265 South to I-64 West and get back on I-264 West, or use I-64 East to reach places inside the closed stretch. Check the new KYTC announcement for the detour when the closure is rescheduled.
The closure is part of the $130 million project to widen and improve I-264 and U.S. 42 in Louisville. KYTC expects the project to be done in fall 2027. The contractor is Cleary Construction Inc. of Monroe County, Ky.
