Louisiana trustees approve East Orleans Landbridge marsh restoration at about $109.4 million

The Deepwater Horizon Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group approved a final plan selecting Alternative 4 for the East Orleans Landbridge Restoration Project, with an estimated cost of $109.4 million, to create and restore marsh between Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Borgne.

The Deepwater Horizon Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group approved a final restoration plan that selects Alternative 4 for the East Orleans Landbridge Restoration Project.

What it does. The project will create and restore marsh habitat along the landbridge separating Lake Pontchartrain from Lake Borgne and the Gulf. The trustees say the work helps compensate for injuries to wetlands, coastal and nearshore resources from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Cost and plan. The estimated cost for Alternative 4 is $109.4 million. It is one of two projects in Final Phase 2 Restoration Plan/Environmental Assessment #8.1; the other is Raccoon Island. Together the two projects total about $265 million and are expected to restore up to about 1,700 acres of wetland, coastal and nearshore habitat.

Public input. A draft was open for comment from May 18 to June 17, 2026, with a webinar on June 8. The trustees received 15 comment submissions and say they revised the plan accordingly before approving the final.
