The Deepwater Horizon Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group approved a final restoration plan that selects Alternative 3 for the Raccoon Island Restoration Project in coastal Louisiana.
What it does. The project will restore barrier-island habitat by placing sediment to create and enhance beach, dune and marsh. The trustees say restoration will create productive habitat for birds, fish and shellfish and help compensate for injuries from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Cost and plan. The estimated cost for Alternative 3 is $156.3 million. It is paired in Final Phase 2 Restoration Plan/Environmental Assessment #8.1 with the East Orleans Landbridge project. Together the two projects total about $265 million and are expected to restore up to about 1,700 acres of wetland, coastal and nearshore habitat.
Public input. The draft plan was open for comment May 18–June 17, 2026. After 15 comment submissions, the trustees say they updated costs and design numbers and revised the Raccoon Island Monitoring and Adaptive Management Plan before approving the final.
