Red Flag Warning: Gogebic County, MI — critical fire weather until 6 p.m. EDT Sunday, Oct. 11

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Marquette issued this Red Flag Warning at 2:58 a.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 10. It is in effect now until 6 p.m. EDT Sunday, Oct. 11 (3 p.m. PDT). A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather is happening now or will start soon. It is the highest fire-weather alert NWS issues.

Where: Ontonagon and Gogebic counties in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula. Parts of Gogebic County are inside the warning area; check the NWS map to see whether your spot is included.

Weather: NWS forecasts South winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph Saturday and gusts up to 25 mph Sunday, with humidity as low as 32 percent both afternoons and very dry fuels. NWS says any fire that develops will likely spread rapidly, and outdoor burning is not recommended.

What to do: do not burn yard debris, use a campfire or do anything that throws sparks (mowing dry grass, dragging trailer chains, target shooting). Do not park on dry grass. If a fire starts, call 911 right away. Know your evacuation route and keep your phone charged so you can get alerts.
