Red Flag Warning: Churchill County, NV — critical fire weather until 9 p.m. PDT Saturday, Oct. 10

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Reno issued this Red Flag Warning at 1:12 a.m. PDT Saturday, Oct. 10. It is in effect now until 9 p.m. PDT Saturday, Oct. 10. A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather is happening now or will start soon. It is the highest fire-weather alert NWS issues.

Where: Fire weather zones along the Sierra Front and western Nevada: southern Mono County; the northern Sierra Front (Carson City, Douglas, Storey, southern Washoe, western Lyon and far southern Lassen counties); the southern Sierra Front (Alpine, northern Mono, southern Lyon and western Mineral counties); the West Humboldt Basin in Pershing County; and the Lahontan Basin (Churchill and eastern Mineral counties). Parts of Churchill County are inside the warning area; check the NWS map to see whether your spot is included.

Weather: NWS forecasts Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 35 to 45 mph and humidity as low as 14 to 22 percent. NWS says any fire that develops will likely spread rapidly, and outdoor burning is not recommended.

What to do: do not burn yard debris, use a campfire or do anything that throws sparks (mowing dry grass, dragging trailer chains, target shooting). Do not park on dry grass. If a fire starts, call 911 right away. Know your evacuation route and keep your phone charged so you can get alerts.
