Storey County Commissioners meet Oct. 20: Fire Inspector II position, community project funding and a Highlands rezoning
The Storey County Board of County Commissioners meets at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, at the courthouse in Virginia City. The agenda includes an unbudgeted Fire Inspector II position, up to $20,000 each in community project funding for Virginia City Highlands and Lockwood, an Estates-to-Public rezoning next to Fire Station 72, and $15.3 million in claims.
Storey County posted the agenda and packet for the Board of County Commissioners meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, at the Storey County Courthouse in Virginia City. The meeting is in person; it is also livestreamed on the Storey County Clerk's YouTube channel (@storeycountyclerk), but public comment is taken in person only.
Consent agenda. Approval of claims totaling $15,329,022.20; a revised Vehicle Stipend Policy 200.002 matching current federal government rates effective Nov. 2, 2026; and first readings of 31 business licenses (contractors, food trucks, general and out-of-county licenses). Twelve more licenses are up for second reading later in the meeting.
Community items. Commissioners will consider moving the Dec. 1, 2026, meeting to the Storey County Justice Court in Virginia City; a State of Nevada opioid release form to join the Albertsons settlement, estimated at $13,501.99 for the county; the community project funding committee's recommendation on a request from VC Landsculpted for the Virginia City and Gold Hill area; up to $20,000 for Virginia City Highlands residents' "Connecting & Protecting our Community" project (community center heating and cooling, a trailer for the fire district's "You Call, We Haul" fire mitigation program, lighting and other community-use items); and up to $20,000 for a gazebo at Louise Peri Park in Lockwood, all for fiscal year 2026–2027.
Fire District. Sitting as the Storey County Fire Protection District board, commissioners will consider an unbudgeted Fire Inspector II position to help with existing and future growth, and taking apart an accessory shed on district property in Virginia City so it can be re-purposed on the Comstock.
Land use and legislation. A Zone Map Amendment (File 2026-039) would rezone one county-owned parcel next to Fire Station 72 in Virginia City Highlands from Estates to Public; the county says no site changes are proposed, and the goal is more flexibility for public-service uses. Commissioners will also give direction on the county's draft economic development and tax abatement bill for the 2027 Nevada Legislature. Notice Nearby left out the parcel street number; it is in the county agenda.
How to comment. Written comments may be emailed to countymanager@storeycounty.org or dropped at the County Manager's Office in the courthouse, and must arrive by 5 p.m. the Monday before the meeting (Oct. 19) to be part of the board packet. In-person comment is limited to three minutes per person. Clerk's Office: 775-847-0969.
