The National Weather Service office in Salt Lake City has a Flood Watch for Utah County from noon MDT Saturday, Oct. 10 (11 a.m. PDT) through 6 p.m. MDT Monday, Oct. 12 (5 p.m. PDT). Moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel is expected to bring rounds of heavy rain.

In southern and central Utah, NWS says runoff may flood rivers, creeks, dry washes, slot canyons, slickrock areas and recent burn scars. The watch area includes the Forsyth, Cottonwood, Silver King, France Canyon and Monroe Canyon burn scars.

In northern Utah, NWS says runoff may flood rivers, creeks and recent burn scars such as Rocky Canyon, along with streets and poor-drainage areas in towns and cities.

Utah's Division of Emergency Management warned that wildfire burn scars can stay at risk for mudslides for at least five years, and said that if you live below a burn scar and it is raining, no one should sleep in the basement (https://x.com/UtahEmergency/status/2108717582757028094).

What to do: stay out of slot canyons and dry washes, and check the forecast before hiking. Never drive into a flooded road or wash. If you live below a burn scar, know your way to higher ground and keep your phone on for emergency alerts.
