Notice Nearby: Mohave County Flash Flood, National Weather Service

Local brief

Flash Flood Warning: Mohave County, AZ — flooding now or soon, until 1:45 p.m. MST Sunday, Oct. 11

The National Weather Service has a Flash Flood Warning for Mohave County, Arizona, until 1:45 p.m. MST Sunday, Oct. 11 (1:45 p.m. PDT). Heavy rain is making creeks, washes and roads flood fast. Turn around, don't drown.

What is happening: Strong thunderstorms are dropping heavy rain on dry desert ground, where water runs off fast into washes and roads. The National Weather Service office in Las Vegas says flash flooding is happening now or will start soon. NWS calls this life-threatening flash flooding. Radar estimates 0.5 to 1.25 inches of rain has fallen across eastern Mohave County, and NWS rates the flood damage threat as considerable.

Where: The warning covers parts of Mohave County: south-central Mohave County east of Kingman, including Valentine, Peach Springs, Diamond M Ranch, Diamond Creek Campground and the Colorado River between river miles 206 and 241 — until 1:45 p.m. MST Sunday, Oct. 11 (1:45 p.m. PDT). Arizona does not use daylight time, so 1:45 p.m. MST is the same clock time as 1:45 p.m. PDT. Places NWS named include Valentine, Diamond M Ranch, Diamond Creek Campground and Peach Springs.

Until when: The warning lasts until 1:45 p.m. MST Sunday, Oct. 11 (1:45 p.m. PDT). NWS can extend it or end it early, so check for updates.

On the river and in canyons: If you are at Diamond Creek Campground or on the Colorado River between river miles 206 and 241, get to higher ground away from side canyons and washes now. Flash floods can roar down from storms miles away, even where it is not raining.

Earlier warnings: The earlier NWS warning that ran until 10:15 a.m. MST Sunday, Oct. 11 (10:15 a.m. PDT) (Lake Havasu City, Yucca, Desert Hills and Golden Valley) has ended. The earlier NWS warning that ran until 10:45 a.m. MST Sunday, Oct. 11 (10:45 a.m. PDT) (Kingman, Pierce Ferry and Antares roads, Grand Canyon Ranch, Packsaddle Campground, Windy Point Campground, Chloride and nearby areas) has ended.

What to do: Turn around, don't drown. Never drive or walk into floodwater. Six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one to two feet can carry away a car. Stay away from creeks, streams, washes, rivers and low roads. Do not drive around barricades. If water starts rising near you, go to higher ground right away. Flooded roads are hard to see in the dark.
