Local brief

Flash Flood Warning: Yavapai County, AZ — flooding now or soon, until 4 p.m. MST Sunday, Oct. 11

The National Weather Service has a Flash Flood Warning for Yavapai County, Arizona, until 4 p.m. MST Sunday, Oct. 11 (4 p.m. PDT). Heavy rain is making creeks, washes and roads flood fast. Turn around, don't drown.

What is happening: Thunderstorms are dropping heavy rain over the Granite Creek basin around Prescott, where water runs fast into creeks, washes, city streets and low-water crossings. The National Weather Service office in Flagstaff says flash flooding is happening now or will start soon. NWS calls this life-threatening flash flooding. Between 0.5 and 1 inch of rain has fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1 inch are possible in the warned area.

Where: The warning covers the Granite Creek basin in Yavapai County, including downtown Prescott and Whipple, AC Williams Granite Creek Park, White Spar Campground, State Route 89 between mile markers 308 and 311 and between 314 and 315, and Butte, Bannon, Willow, Granite and Miller creeks.

Until when: The warning lasts until 4 p.m. MST Sunday, Oct. 11 (4 p.m. PDT). NWS can extend it or end it early, so check for updates.

What to do: Turn around, don't drown. Never drive or walk into floodwater. Six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one to two feet can carry away a car. Stay away from creeks, streams, washes, rivers and low roads. Do not drive around barricades. If water starts rising near you, go to higher ground right away. Flooded roads are hard to see in the dark.
