What happened: Strong thunderstorms dropped heavy rain on dry desert ground, where water runs off fast into washes and roads. The National Weather Service office in Las Vegas warned that flash flooding was happening or about to start. NWS calls this life-threatening flash flooding. Between 0.25 and 0.75 inches of rain have fallen.
Where: The warning covers south-central Inyo County in Death Valley National Park. Places NWS named include Furnace Creek, Stovepipe Wells and Texas Springs Campground.

What to do: Turn around, don't drown. Never drive or walk into floodwater. Six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one to two feet can carry away a car. Flooded roads are hard to see in the dark.
