Texas: Wildfire danger expected to increase across East and Central Texas this weekend, TDEM says

The Texas Division of Emergency Management said Wednesday, Oct. 14, that wildfire danger is expected to increase across East and Central Texas as the weekend of Oct. 17-18 approaches, and that gusty winds behind a cold front could raise the potential for wildfires.

Essentials: The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) posted on X at 10:58 a.m. CDT Wednesday, Oct. 14 (8:58 a.m. PDT), that wildfire danger is expected to increase across East and Central Texas as we approach the weekend. TDEM said gusty winds behind a cold front could raise the potential for wildfires.

What to do: TDEM says now is the time to make a plan and be prepared to follow directions from local officials. On Oct. 10, TDEM reminded Texans to secure trailer chains and observe local policies on outdoor burning, and said more than two dozen fires had ignited since Oct. 1 that required state assistance.

The weather pattern: The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center Day 3-8 Fire Weather Outlook, issued 4:57 p.m. CDT Tuesday, Oct. 13, says a strong cold front will usher a drier continental air mass into much of the eastern United States through the weekend. That outlook did not draw a Texas fire weather risk area as of its issue time; check for updates.
