What is happening: At 5:05 a.m. MDT (4:05 a.m. PDT), river gauges showed flash flooding on the Paria River near U.S. 89. NWS warns of life-threatening flooding of creeks and streams, highways, streets and low spots. This comes after two days of heavy rain from the leftover moisture of Tropical Storm Rachel; a Flood Watch also stays in effect for much of southern Utah through 6 p.m. MDT Monday (5 p.m. PDT).
Paria Canyon and the Wire Pass / Buckskin Gulch area: Do not enter Paria Canyon, Buckskin Gulch or any slot canyon or dry wash today. Do not try to cross the Paria River on foot or by car. Water can rise many feet in minutes, even where it is not raining. If you are already in the canyon, climb to high ground and wait for the water to drop. Check Bureau of Land Management Kanab Field Office alerts before any trip.
What to do: Turn around, don't drown. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Never drive or walk into floodwater; six inches of moving water can knock you down and one to two feet can carry away a car. Do not drive around barricades on U.S. 89 or side roads. If water rises near you, go to higher ground right away. Emergency? Call 911.
