Local brief

Flood Warning: Forsyth burn scar and Pine Valley, Washington County, UT — debris flows possible until 9 a.m. MDT (8 a.m. PDT) Monday

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City issued a Flood Warning for the Forsyth burn scar in central Washington County, Utah, including Pine Valley, at 12:17 a.m. MDT Monday, Oct. 12. It runs until 9 a.m. MDT (8 a.m. PDT). It replaces the Flash Flood Warning that expired at 12:15 a.m. MDT. Stay off flooded roads and away from the Santa Clara River.

Essentials: Flood Warning from the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City for the Forsyth burn scar in central Washington County, including Pine Valley. Issued 12:17 a.m. MDT Monday, Oct. 12 (11:17 p.m. PDT Sunday). In effect until 9 a.m. MDT Monday (8 a.m. PDT).

What is happening: NWS says high flows that are still running and more rain overnight will keep flooding going across the Forsyth burn scar and along the Santa Clara River from Pine Valley down to Baker Reservoir. Rain on the burn scar will cause debris flows: moving rock, mud, plants and other loose material.

What changed: The Flash Flood Warning for this area expired at 12:15 a.m. MDT. NWS replaced it two minutes later with this Flood Warning, so flooding and debris flows are still expected; this is not an all-clear.

What to do: Turn around, don't drown. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Do not drive Utah Route 18 or any road through water, mud or debris, and be extra careful in the dark. Stay away from the Santa Clara River, creeks and washes below the burn scar. If water or debris starts moving toward you, get to higher ground right away.

Also in effect: A Flood Watch covers Zion National Park and lower Washington County through 6 p.m. MDT Monday, Oct. 12 (5 p.m. PDT).
