Charles R. Long’s Bronze Star for Valor (World War II) and Purple Heart are named in the Department of Veterans Affairs’ #VeteranOfTheDay profile of his Army service. This decorations page records those two types from that VA list. It will not invent oak-leaf counts the VA paragraph does not carry, and it will not place a Medal of Honor chip on this awards row — the CMOHS citation for Hoengsong, Korea, 12 February 1951, stands on its own war-roll pages when written.
Born in Kansas City in December 1923 and raised nearby in Independence, Long served with the 745th Tank Battalion in the Ardennes and on the Rhine. Recalled for Korea, he was a mortar forward observer with Company M, 38th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division. On Hill 300 near Hoengsong he stayed on the radio under a night attack so his platoon could pull back, then called fire onto his own overrun position. He was twenty-seven. The Purple Heart and the Bronze Star with Valor are the published decoration names this register carries from the VA account. Burial at Mount Washington Cemetery in Independence is public fact. It is not printed here as a medal.
