Documented decorations

Henry Johnson was cut to pieces holding an Argonne outpost with Needham Roberts on the night of May 15, 1918. France named the Croix de Guerre with palm while he was still in the war. The United States was late. A Purple Heart was awarded in 1996. The Medal of Honor was presented on June 2, 2015.

The Bronze Star Medal did not exist in 1918. This page will not backdate it. The decoration this register can honestly list from the U.S. personal awards that later caught up to the wounds is the Purple Heart.

He is on the World War I roll. The war page already says the country was late. This decorations page says the same thing with the medal that marks the wounds, and cites the Medal of Honor Society record rather than a later nickname.
