The Silver Star citation — Headquarters, 1st Aviation Brigade, General Orders No. 5800 — covers two volunteer emergency re-supply flights into Firebase 5 northwest of Pleiku on May 24, 1971, under mortar and automatic-weapons fire. The second approach ended when the helicopter exploded on short final. That citation is the public record of gallantry. The Purple Heart is the published mark of the wound that ended the flight.
