Melvin Carl Anderson’s Bronze Star and Purple Heart are named in the Department of Veterans Affairs’ #VeteranOfTheDay profile of his tank-destroyer service in Europe. This decorations page records those two types from that VA list. It will not invent oak-leaf counts that the VA paragraph does not state, even when later memorial pages use different wound wording.
Born 15 December 1912 and raised in Nebraska after a Missouri start, Anderson landed in Normandy on 10 June 1944 with the 803rd Tank Destroyer Battalion. A sniper wounded him soon after; he returned to the line. On 25 November 1944 his M10 was set ablaze in the Hürtgen Forest fighting near Grosshau. He and a crewmate could not get out. Remains unidentified for decades were accounted for in 2018 and buried with honors at Omaha National Cemetery. The Bronze Star and Purple Heart are the published decoration names from the VA account.
