Robert Joseph Dole was a second lieutenant in the 10th Mountain Division when the spring offensive in northern Italy reached him. He was wounded, returned, and on April 14, 1945, was hit again while trying to aid a radio operator. He spent years in Army hospitals, including Percy Jones in Battle Creek — the same wards that held Daniel Inouye.
A Senate document of the 109th Congress and a 2019 U.S. Army article name two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star Medal with oak-leaf cluster. Those are the decorations this page will print. Later honorary rank, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a Congressional Gold Medal are civilian and legislative honors. They are not Bronze Stars, and they are not listed here as if they were.
