Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson, seventh President of the United States, died at the Hermitage near Nashville on June 8, 1845. He was seventy-eight. Born in the Waxhaws on March 15, 1767, he was a lawyer, a judge, a general at New Orleans, and a president who expanded the vote for white men while enforcing Indian removal that emptied the South of nations that had been there first. He was loved and hated in equal heat. The bank war, the spoils, and the duels belong to the same life as the orphan who never stopped fighting. Nashville was the plantation and the tomb he shares with Rachel. This memorial does not sand the record. It places him where he died.
