Anthony Salvatore Greco died in Trenton on August 22, 2026. He was seventy-eight. Born there on July 16, 1948, he grew up knowing the river as work and the statehouse as a neighbor that never quite introduced itself. He learned a bindery before he learned a campus. A signature, he said, is a kind of promise: it has to stay on the page or the whole story is wet.
He spent thirty-three years in a state printing shop, first as a helper, later as the man who could hear a bad stitch before the machine admitted it. He did not advertise. Supervisors called him because he would tell the truth about a rush even when the truth postponed a hearing packet. He charged a fair hour on the side when a church bulletin needed more mercy than a contract. He kept a notebook of jobs, not clients.
He married Angela Greco in 1972. They raised two sons in a two-family that smelled of gravy on Sundays and solvent on Mondays. Angela kept the books for a cousin's deli. Anthony grilled in the driveway and considered a Giants loss a private grief. After he retired he still came out when a neighbor's copier died, moving slower, swearing with more precision.
Friends remember a man who wiped his hands on a rag that had already done too much, who could sit through a long offering at church without checking a clock, and who hummed while he worked as if the press were a conversation. He loved the river lights at evening, a plate of mussels he did not finish, and the particular quiet after a job holds. He died in Trenton, the city he never wanted explained to strangers. The shop is still working. Someone else will stitch the next one.
