Antoine Marcel Doucet

Antoine Marcel Doucet died in Pensacola on August 20, 2026. He was sixty-nine. Born there on December 3, 1956, he grew up knowing the bay as a clock and a weather report. His father kept a shrimp boat running in weather that punished hesitation. Antoine learned a socket set before he learned a highway north. He spent most of his adult life on a small yard at the edge of the waterfront, first as a line kid dragging hoses, later as the mechanic who could hear a tired injector before the logbook admitted it. He did not fish for a living. He kept other people's boats from becoming stories. Captains called him because he would ground a machine even when the charter money was already promised. He kept a coffee can of AN hardware and a refusal to charge a church youth trip what a catalog said a hose was worth. He married June Doucet in 1978. They raised two sons in a house that needed a new mudroom after every bad storm. June taught at the elementary. Antoine packed her lunches with the same seriousness he packed a toolbox. After his hands stiffened he still came out for a favorite hull, moving slower, swearing with more precision. Friends remember a man who would jump a battery at dusk without calling it a favor, who could sit through a long potluck without making the humidity a personality, and who owned one good shirt. He liked the pass in late April, when the water finally argued with itself, and a slice of pie he never quite finished. He died in Pensacola, the only latitude he had ever needed. The yard light is off. A lot of small boats still start because he was stubborn about a job.
