Benjamin Hugh Corbin died in Atlanta on August 25, 2026. He was seventy-four. Born there on June 15, 1952, he grew up knowing the bus as a neighbor that never slept, and he learned a route book before he learned a necktie. A schedule, he said, is a kind of promise to people who do not own a second clock.
He spent thirty-two years driving for MARTA, first on the early runs that caught the kitchen workers, later on the midtown loops that caught everyone else. He did not romanticize the work. He said a Friday night was a country with its own weather. He taught younger operators that a kneeling bus is not a courtesy you skip when you are late, and that you do not leave a stop because a person is moving slowly. He kept a thermos and a privately updated list of which benches actually had shade.
He married Inez Corbin in 1976. They raised two sons in a brick house that needed a new porch every twenty years. Inez taught Sunday school. Benjamin grilled on Sundays and considered a plate of smoked chicken a seasonal obligation. After his back quit the worst runs he still came out to ride as a passenger and complain, fondly, about a turn he used to make better.
Friends remember a man who waited an extra breath for a woman with bags, who could sit in a noise without making it a personality, and who left a coach cleaner than he found it. He loved a quiet porch at dusk, a glass of tea he did not finish, and the sound of a diesel that had decided to live. He died in Atlanta, in the city whose routes had written his calendar. The line still starts. Someone else will open the door.
