Enok Halvard Solberg

Enok Halvard Solberg died in Juneau on August 18, 2026. He was seventy-eight. Born there on January 29, 1948, he learned the channel before he learned a highway. There is no road out of Juneau that satisfies a map. Enok treated that fact as a work schedule. His father kept a skiff. Enok learned a hitch before he learned a necktie. He spent most of his adult life on the state ferries, first as a line kid catching a hawser in weather that punished hesitation, later as the deckhand who could hear a tired winch before the logbook admitted it. He did not romanticize the Inside Passage. He said beauty from the solarium and danger from the car deck were both true before breakfast. He kept a coffee can of spare shackles and a refusal to charge a village clinic what a catalog said a hose was worth. He married Ingrid Solberg in 1972. They raised two sons in a house that needed a new mudroom every decade. Ingrid taught at the elementary. Enok packed her lunches with the same seriousness he packed a toolbox. After his hands stiffened he still came out for a favorite run, moving slower, swearing with more precision. Friends remember a man who would jump a truck at dusk without calling it a favor, who could sit through a long potluck without making the rain a personality, and who owned one good parka. He liked the first break in the clouds over Gastineau, a slice of pie he never quite finished, and the particular quiet after the last car was chained. He died in Juneau, the only latitude he had ever needed. The ferry still leaves. A lot of small towns still connect because he was stubborn about a job.
