Frederick Law Olmsted died in Belmont, Massachusetts, on August 28, 1903. He was eighty-one. Born in Hartford on April 26, 1822, he designed Central Park with Calvert Vaux, then a generation of parks, parkways, campuses, and the 1893 fairgrounds that taught American cities how green space could be a public work.
Fairsted in Brookline was the office that trained the profession. He spent his last years in an institution, his memory gone, while the firm went on. This memorial names Brookline, where the plans were drawn.
