Gale Sayers

Gale Sayers — Gale Eugene Sayers — Chicago Bears running back nicknamed the Kansas Comet and later a Pro Football Hall of Famer, died in Wakarusa, Indiana, on September 23, 2020. He was seventy-seven. Born May 30, 1943, in Wichita, Kansas, he starred at the University of Kansas, joined the Bears in 1965, and in a brief prime made open-field running look like improvisation set to silence. Injuries shortened the highlight reel; courage lengthened the legend. After a devastating knee injury he returned to lead the league in rushing, then saw his career end early anyway. His friendship with teammate Brian Piccolo — sealed in a memorable acceptance speech and later in the film Brian's Song — taught a national television audience that toughness could include tenderness. Inducted into the Hall of Fame at thirty-four, he later worked in athletic administration and business while the old film grain of his cuts kept recruiting new fans. Wakarusa was a late Midwestern chapter after Kansas and Chicago. He died after years with dementia, a fate shared by too many of his generation's players and still part of football's unfinished argument with itself. He died in Wakarusa on September 23, 2020.
