Georgia Totto O'Keeffe

Georgia Totto O'Keeffe died in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on March 6, 1986. She was ninety-eight. Born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, on November 15, 1887, she painted New York and then the New Mexico high desert — bones, adobe, and flowers large enough to be landscapes. She lived at Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch with a discipline that looked like solitude and was a working schedule. Stieglitz was the New York chapter. The late canvases are New Mexico without apology. Santa Fe keeps the museum. The ashes were scattered north of town.
