Isadora Duncan

Isadora Duncan, the San Francisco–born dancer who tore classical ballet’s corset loose and called the result modern, died in Nice, France, on September 14, 1927, when a long scarf caught in the wheel of an open automobile. She was fifty. The accident was grotesque and swift; the career behind it had been neither. Born Angela Isadora Duncan on May 26, 1877, she left California for stages that would accept bare feet, Greek tunic, and a theory of movement drawn from wind and wave more than from turnout.
