Jane Addams

Jane Addams died in Chicago on May 21, 1935. She was seventy-four. Born in Cedarville, Illinois, on September 6, 1860, she opened Hull-House on Halsted Street in 1889 and spent the next decades inventing what American settlement work would look like: classes, child care, labor museums, and a stubborn attention to the ward around the door. She wrote, served on boards, and in 1931 shared the Nobel Peace Prize for a lifetime of opposing war and arguing that neighborhoods were a foreign policy. Chicago argued with her and then claimed her. Hull-House is a museum now. The neighborhood changed. The method did not expire.
