Odell Maurice Faircloth

Odell Maurice Faircloth died in Mobile on September 9, 2026. He was eighty. He was born in Prichard on March 22, 1946, in a shotgun house that sat close enough to the yards that children learned a horn before they learned a hymn. His father chipped rust on hulls. Odell learned that a bead of weld is a kind of sentence: it holds, or the whole story opens in salt. He spent thirty-two years in a shipyard that built and repaired work that other cities only ordered. He started as a helper dragging leads. He ended as the man who could tell, from the color of a puddle, whether a plate would take another pass. He kept extra gloves for the kid whose morning had already been too long. He would not sign a burn that made the inspector a liar. He married Corinne Faircloth in 1968. They raised a son and a daughter in a bungalow that needed a new roof more often than the paycheck admitted. After Corinne died in 2014 he kept her saucer on the drainboard for a season, then gave it to a granddaughter who liked cereal at odd hours. He sang bass in a choir that rehearsed whether anyone new showed up or not. People on his block remember a man who froze extra gumbo in coffee cans and left them after a funeral, who wiped his hands before he shook yours, and who owned one good suit. He liked the bay early, before the heat made a speech of itself. He died in Mobile, in humidity he had always said was honest. The yard still opens.
