Sigrid Marie Folstad

Sigrid Marie Folstad died in Bellingham on August 24, 2026. She was eighty-one. Born there on January 21, 1945, she grew up knowing rain as a work schedule, not a conversation. Her father kept a seine skiff running in weather that punished hesitation. Sigrid learned a splice before she learned a highway south. She spent most of her adult life on a cannery line, first as a kid packing tins, later as the woman who could hear a tired seamer before the logbook admitted it. She did not own the boats. She kept other people's fish from becoming a story about waste. Skippers called her because she would shut a line even when the tender was already promised. She kept a coffee can of stainless hardware and a refusal to charge a village clinic what a catalog said a hose was worth. She married Nils Folstad in 1967. They raised two sons in a house that needed a new mudroom every decade. Nils taught at the elementary. Sigrid packed lunches with the same seriousness she packed a toolbox. After her hands stiffened she still came out for a favorite line, moving slower, swearing with more precision. Friends remember a woman who would jump a battery in a wet lot without calling it a favor, who could sit through a long potluck without making the rain a personality, and who owned one good parka. She liked the bay in late April, when the water finally argued with itself, and a slice of pie she never quite finished. She died in Bellingham, the only latitude she had ever needed. The line light is off. A lot of small machines still start because she was stubborn about a job.
