Teodora Anna Krzyzanowski

Teodora Anna Krzyzanowski died in Buffalo on September 7, 2026. She was eighty-six. Born there on January 23, 1940, to parents who had come from Kraków by way of a long patience, she grew up in a city that still had grain at the edges and offices in the middle. She learned English at school and a second set of manners at the table. She never treated either language as a costume. She spent twenty years in an elevator that treated a ticket as a promise, then another sixteen running a school kitchen that fed children who treated gravy as a weather report. She started washing pans that never quite came clean. She ended as the woman who could tell, from the sound of a pot, whether the rice would hold through a late bus. She kept extra milk without making a speech about it. She married Wladyslaw Krzyzanowski in 1961. They raised a son and a daughter in a bungalow that needed storm windows. After Wladyslaw died in 2006 she still sat with neighbors who had to renew something and did not know where to start. Grandchildren remember a woman who corrected their thank-you notes more than their homework, who kept a biscuit tin of paper clips, and who could name every auntie in the sanctuary by the hat she no longer wore. She died in Buffalo, in cold she had always preferred to a heavy humidity. The kitchen is someone else's now.
