Wladyslaw Jan Nowakowski

Wladyslaw Jan Nowakowski died in Syracuse on September 4, 2026, at eighty-five. He was born there on March 8, 1941, to parents who had come from Lwów by way of a patience that did not advertise. He grew up in a city that still had gears at the edges and offices in the middle. He learned English at school and a second set of manners at the table. For thirty-five years he was a machinist, crawling under machines that other men only blamed. He arrived early. He did not advertise. Foremen called him because he would write up a cracked bearing even when the shift was already called. He kept a notebook of machines, not clients. The notebook had grease on the edges. He married Halina Nowakowski in 1963. They raised two children in a bungalow that needed a new porch every twenty years. After Halina died in 2011 he still came out for a favorite press, moving slower, doing the same honest work. Friends remember a man who wiped his hands before he shook yours, who could stand in a noise without making it a personality, and who left a floor cleaner than he found it. He loved the lake at evening and a glass of tea he did not finish. He died in Syracuse, in the city whose shop had written his calendar. The line still starts.
