Nils Peter Hagen

Nils Peter Hagen died in Bismarck on August 19, 2026. He was eighty-seven. Born there on June 20, 1939, he grew up knowing the elevator as a clock and the river as a weekday neighbor. He learned a grain probe before he learned a necktie. A correct sample, he said, is a kind of promise: it has to be true or the whole story is a lie to a farmer. He spent thirty-six years at a grain elevator, first as a helper, later as the man who could hear a bad belt before the gauge admitted it. He did not advertise.
