CBP agriculture specialists intercept a first-in-nation plant pathogen at Houston IAH

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) intercepted eucalyptus leaves carrying a plant pathogen USDA later confirmed as Davisoniella eucalypti — the first time that pathogen had been intercepted at a U.S. port of entry, according to CBP’s September 22, 2026 release.
CBP says the find came from baggage on a traveler from New Zealand. Samples went to USDA plant pathologists. The agency frames the interception as protecting U.S. eucalyptus timber and nursery stock from a fungus that can defoliate and slow growth.
