DARPA’s Insect Allies: gene couriers that stayed indoors

The sentence is on darpa.mil, not in a rumor. The Insect Allies program page says the effort sought “scalable, readily deployable, and generalizable countermeasures” against natural and engineered threats to the crop system, by applying targeted therapies to mature plants “within a single growing season.” The delivery system it names is the one nature already uses: insect vectors and the plant viruses they transmit. Three technical areas are listed — viral manipulation, insect vector optimization, and selective gene therapy in mature plants.

The same page draws the line that makes the program legible. “All work is conducted inside closed laboratories, greenhouses, or other secured facilities; DARPA is not funding open release.” The banner now says the program is complete and the page is no longer maintained. A 2016 DARPA news post, still on the agency’s site, introduced the name: turn certain insect pests into “Insect Allies,” with Blake Bextine as program manager, and a proposers day set for November 18, 2016.

This brief does not adopt anyone else’s allegation about what the insects could have been used for. It records what the agency posted, including the closed-facility rule and the completion stamp.
