Section 2A still names three goals

People say the Fed has a dual mandate. The statute the Board posts under Section 2A of the Federal Reserve Act lists maximum employment, stable prices, and moderate long-term interest rates.

Section 2A of the Federal Reserve Act is one sentence, and the Board publishes it in full. The Board of Governors and the Federal Open Market Committee “shall maintain long run growth of the monetary and credit aggregates commensurate with the economy’s long run potential to increase production, so as to promote effectively the goals of maximum employment, stable prices, and moderate long-term interest rates.”

The citation line under that sentence is the part worth keeping. The Board prints it as 12 U.S.C. 225a, added by the act of November 16, 1977 (91 Stat. 1387), and amended in 1978, 1988, and 2000. The phrase “dual mandate” is the nickname. The posted statute still ends on a third goal: moderate long-term interest rates. The September 16, 2026 statement uses the nickname — “in support of the Federal Reserve’s dual mandate” — and pairs it with a 2 percent inflation goal that Section 2A does not number. Both pages are official. They are not the same sentence.

A public-notice register does not set the aggregates. It can, however, refuse to shorten a statute that the Board has already typed out. If you came here for the current target range, the September 16 statement has it. If you came here for the legal objects of the policy, this is the section.
