NOAA awards $13.4 million for harmful algal bloom and hypoxia research

Funded projects will advance the understanding and management of HABs across the U.S. by developing predictive models, investigating ecological drivers and toxin mechanisms, and assessing the economic and social impacts of mitigation efforts.
HABs occur in marine and fresh water and can produce harmful toxins that damage ecosystems. Hypoxia, also known as dead zones, refers to low or depleted oxygen in a water body where most aquatic life cannot survive. While HABs and hypoxia are naturally occurring, the frequency and severity have increased in recent years.
