Documented decorations

Rachel Bosveld’s second Purple Heart and Bronze Star are named in the Department of Veterans Affairs’ #VeteranOfTheDay profile of her Army military police service in Iraq. This decorations page records those two types from that VA sentence. It will not invent a Combat “V” or an extra Purple Heart beyond the “second” wording VA uses.

Born in November 1983 and raised in Wisconsin, Bosveld enlisted after high school in 2002, trained at Fort Leonard Wood, and served with the 527th Military Police Company from Giessen, Germany. Deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2003, she worked security in the Abu Ghraib District. An RPG strike on 12 September wounded her; on 26 October 2003 a mortar attack killed her at age nineteen while she was a private first class. Connecticut National Guard soldiers who carried her from the fire later vowed to visit her Wisconsin grave each year. The second Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal are the published decoration names here.
