Ray A. Ramirez’s Bronze Star and Purple Heart are named in the Department of Veterans Affairs’ #VeteranOfTheDay profile of his Afghanistan infantry service. From Sacramento, Ramirez enlisted after high school rather than take a Division I baseball scholarship. Assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry at Fort Stewart, he was mortally wounded by an IED in Wardak Province on 1 June 2013. He was twenty years old; final rank Specialist. He is interred at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. Military Times Honor the Fallen corroborates unit and date. The Bronze Star and Purple Heart are the published decoration names from the VA account.
