Robert Goldman’s Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart are named in the Department of Veterans Affairs’ #VeteranOfTheDay profile of his Coast Guard service aboard LST-66 at Leyte. Enlisting in 1942 after agriculture study in Connecticut, Goldman trained as a pharmacist’s mate and reported to LST-66 for southwest Pacific duty. On 12 November 1944 a Japanese kamikaze struck the deck at Leyte; Goldman was burned and hit by shrapnel yet treated other wounded with morphine and plasma before accepting care himself. He discharged in September 1945, later headed marketing for the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, and died in 2006 at eighty-six.
