Missing in action — DPAA's public Gulf Wars accounting page still lists Lt. Robert J. Dwyer, of Worthington, Ohio, as unaccounted for. He was lost on February 5, 1991, when his F/A-18 went down in the Persian Gulf. Neither the airplane nor identified remains have been recovered. A later finding of death is not a grave.
Robert J. Dwyer was a Navy Hornet pilot from Worthington, Ohio, flying from the Theodore Roosevelt air wing in the first days of Desert Storm. On February 5, 1991, the F/A-18 did not come back from a mission over the Persian Gulf. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency still lists him unaccounted for.
The public file does not close the last minutes. Competing later explanations — combat damage, navigation failure, fuel — are arguments among living historians and unofficial summaries. This register will not pick one. It will say a named lieutenant left the ship in a Hornet and that neither the airplane nor identified remains have been returned to U.S. custody.
A finding of death later that winter put a date on paper. It did not produce a grave. He is the second of the two Desert Storm aircrew DPAA still carries as missing from that war. This page will not invent a last radio call or scrape a private family's sentences.
