William E. Barber

William Earl Barber held a frozen hill when the Chosin campaign was coming apart. In late November 1950, as a captain of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, he was ordered to hold Toktong Pass — Fox Hill — so the division could withdraw south. He was wounded early and stayed. For five days his company fought in weather that broke weapons and men, until a relief column reached them.

The Medal of Honor citation records the wound, the refusal to be evacuated, and the stand that kept the pass open. Barber lived to wear the medal and to serve on as a Marine colonel. He died in Irvine, California, on April 19, 2002. That is a grave in peacetime. This register will not invent missing-in-action status for a captain who came off the hill and grew old in the Corps.

He was born in Dehart, Kentucky, on November 30, 1919. The photograph is an official Marine likeness. This page will not invent romance for Chosin. It will say a Kentucky captain, a named hill, a documented citation, and a road home that depended on men who would not leave the ground. The file is closed because he came home — not because the war was tidy.

Fox Hill was a pass, not a metaphor. The division's withdrawal south needed that ground held in weather that froze rifles and men alike. Barber's company held it. The citation is enough. Later rank and a California death do not enlarge the five days, and this register will not pretend they do. He is listed for the stand, the wound he would not leave, and the fact that he is accounted for.
