Alexander W. Doniphan

Alexander William Doniphan was a Liberty, Missouri, lawyer who answered the 1846 call for volunteers as a private and was elected colonel of the 1st Regiment Missouri Mounted Volunteers. Under Brigadier General Stephen W. Kearny he helped occupy New Mexico with the Army of the West, then took an independent mounted column south into Chihuahua on what newspaper readers soon called Doniphan's Expedition. On Christmas Day 1846 his Missourians fought at El Brazito; on February 28, 1847 they broke a larger Mexican force at the Sacramento River outside Chihuahua City. After linking with Zachary Taylor's command they marched to the Gulf, shipped to New Orleans, and mustered out — a round trip that military historians still cite among the longest successful volunteer marches of the war.

Doniphan was not a professional soldier. The record that matters here is volunteer election, written orders, named battles, and a regiment that stayed together across desert distance. He returned to the bar and to Missouri politics; a Kansas county and town carry his name. Earlier he had refused illegal orders during the 1838 Mormon War in Missouri — a civilian lawyer's stubbornness that sits beside, not above, the Mexican War campaign.
