John A. Quitman came south from the Hudson Valley, built a Natchez law practice, and then took volunteer rank when the war with Mexico opened. Under Taylor he fought at Monterrey in 1846; under Scott he led a brigade into Mexico City in 1847 and was among the officers who forced the Belén Gate. Scott briefly made him military governor of the captured capital — an administrative title earned on the approach march, not invented afterward.
Mississippi later sent him to the House and back to the governor’s chair; those civilian chapters sit outside this card. Here the register keeps the Monterrey–Mexico City volunteer generalship: dates, gates, and command as written in campaign reports. Quitman died in Natchez in 1858.
